Next lecture being hosted by Limerick Historical Society will be on Monday March 12th at 8 p.m. in Room 203 in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick The lecture is by Sorcha O’Brien on the construction of Shannon Hydroelectric Scheme in the 1920s, to harness the power of the River Shannon. Admission is free, and everybody is welcome.
In her latest book, Powering the Nation, Sorcha O’Brien details the fascinating story of the Shannon Hydroelectric Scheme. This greatest industrial initiative of the fledgling Irish Free State is portrayed in a visual history examining the construction of this symbol of modern ingenuity.
Sorcha O’Brien is a design historian who teaches in Kingston University, UK. She is co-editor of the anthology Love Objects: Emotion, Design and Material Culture and subject editor for the Bloomsbury Encyclopaedia of Design.
